Up do's
Up do's are probably the best style if you're going for the just the elegant look. They are made to more or less regal by how messy it is, or by how much hair you drop down from the up do.
Long styles
If you have long hair, flaunt it! There are so many styles you can do with long hair, especially elegant ones for prom. You can put pretty flowers or other accessories in your hair, or even put a back quiff in. Have your hair crimped, waved, or pin straight.
Braid Styles
Now I wouldn't recommend, but if you're looking to have the most unique and different style, and you can pull it off, then a complex braid would be perfect for you. Must be done absolutely neatly, as while messy braid styles are nice, they aren't nice for prom.
Ponytail Styles
Ponytails aren't also that good for prom, but if it's done with your own hair wrapped around it, then it can look very elegant. Also, must be curly or crimped or something, not just pin straight because it won't look elegant enough, but if you can pull off the look, then I applaud you :)
(EDIT)
I've decided to make extend this post since it was so popular. Obviously Americans have a lot more proms and parties than we Brits do, so I've added some more pictures and ideas!
Enjoy these! Some of these are really hard, so have a couple of practices first before you use for your big day. Get someone to help you or try it out on your friends head first :)
